Can cabinets match a paint color you already love?

Often, yes. One cabinet maker we sell can finish its cabinets in a color from either of the two big national paint brands, ordered by the color’s name and code. Bring the name, the code and a painted sample, and we confirm the color for your Hinsdale, IL kitchen before the order.

Where does a custom color request start?

With the color’s exact name and code, as printed on the paint chip. A color that exists only in a photo can’t be ordered.

  • Color: the paint brand, the color’s name and its code.
  • Door: the shape the color goes on.
  • Coverage: the whole kitchen, the island or one run of cabinets.
  • Sample: a painted chip or piece we can hold against a door.

Ask early, before the rest of the order is final. A custom finish is made for your order, and its timing comes with your quote.

When is a custom color worth exploring?

When the cabinets have to agree with something you’re keeping: painted trim, built-ins in the next room, or a color already on the walls of a mudroom or bar.

Check the standard finishes first. Our shaker door comes in a bright white, a soft white, cream, gray, warm and brown wood, deep blue and black, and one of them may sit close enough to your color.

What if your Hinsdale home is older?

CMAP’s Hinsdale snapshot, built on Census survey data, puts about one in six homes before 1940, and both downtown and the Robbins Park area are listed as historic districts on the National Register.

If the kitchen opens onto original trim or painted built-ins, the new cabinets will be judged against them. When you know that woodwork’s paint color by name and code, the cabinets can be ordered in the same color.

Changing walls or layout is a bigger question than color. Read our guide to kitchen and bath permits in Hinsdale first.

What if you do not know the existing paint color?

Take a painted piece you can spare, such as an old cabinet door you’re replacing, to a store for either of the two paint brands and ask for the closest color in its line.

Hold that chip against the real trim, in the room itself, then copy its name and code exactly as printed.

Does door style change the effect?

A little. On a slab, a color reads as one flat plane. On a Shaker door, each inner edge throws a thin line of shadow, so the same color shows the outline of the door and looks a touch deeper. Choose the door and the color together.

Check the sample beside your countertop and flooring in daylight and under your evening lights. Our cabinet guide shows the door shapes.

What should be settled before the order?

  1. Plan: we measure the room and draw the layout in 3D.
  2. Color: the paint brand, name and code, with your sample.
  3. Door: the shape the color goes on, seen in the room.
  4. Record: the finish name stays with your order papers.

Touch-up paint for a cabinet finish comes through the store you bought from, so keep that finish name. For our customers, that is one call to us.

More on custom colors

Can every cabinet be ordered in a custom color?

No. Custom colors come through one of the cabinet makers we carry, by the paint color’s name and code. Bring yours and we’ll check it.

What should I bring for a color match?

The paint brand, the color’s name and code exactly as printed, a painted chip or sample, and photos of the room.

Will the same paint color look identical on trim and cabinets?

Close, but sheen, material and light change how a color reads. Hold the cabinet sample against the trim in the room before you approve it.

Does a custom finish change the delivery date?

It is made for your order, so we give you its timing with your quote.
