New cabinets for an older Western Springs home: walls, sizes and fillers
Start with the real walls, then compare the cabinet box, doors and hardware. Framed and frameless cabinets differ at the front opening, while materials and fittings depend on the product. For an older Western Springs kitchen, check usable storage, fillers, clearances and available sizes before settling on a door and finish.

Why does the age of the house matter?
Western Springs has been a village since 1886, and in the decades after it grew south by annexing Forest Hills, Springdale and Ridgewood. The median home in the village was built in 1961, according to CMAP’s June 2026 community data snapshot.
A kitchen in a house that age was laid out long before today’s cabinet catalogs. The new cabinets have to fit those walls, and you get to choose how they’re built.
What does a face frame do?
A framed cabinet has a frame around the front opening. A frameless cabinet mounts its doors directly to the box. That changes the opening, but does not by itself tell you which cabinet is better made.
In an older kitchen with narrow cabinet runs, compare the actual drawer and shelf space on each option. The same outside width can leave different usable space inside.

Which look suits an older house?
Start with the trim, doors and floors you are keeping. An inset door sits within a face frame; full-overlay doors cover much of the front; a slab door has a plain face and a Shaker door has a framed panel.
Ask which door fits the cabinet construction you are considering. Our resources page explains these choices, and our framed and frameless guide looks behind the door.
What should you ask about construction?
- Box: panel material, thickness and how the back attaches.
- Drawers: box material, joints, full extension and usable depth.
- Hardware: soft-close action, adjustment and stated load limits.
- Exposed ends: the panels and trim included in the quote.

Get the answers for the exact cabinets you choose. Features vary between products, so a sample door alone is not the full specification.
Will standard sizes fit an older kitchen?
Measure every wall, window, doorway and appliance opening. Check the room at more than one height: an older wall or floor may not be straight or level.
We draw the kitchen in 3D from the measurements, then check fillers, end panels and door swings. Ask which size changes are available for your chosen product before counting on a special width or depth.
A cabinet that fits between two walls still needs room for its doors and drawers to open without hitting trim or appliances.
Does Western Springs need a permit for new cabinets?
Plan on it. “Kitchen Cabinet/Countertop Replacements” is on the village’s own permit list, under Finishes. Our guide to permits for cabinets and countertops in Western Springs walks through what else on the village’s list a kitchen update can touch.
